What is the process off an implant treatment?

Although the duration of an implant treatment is longer than conventional prosthesis, the results achieved with implants are far better.

Implant treatment is applied in 2 steps, surgical and prosthesis. The surgical step is decreased to 6 weeks with the developments of new materials. Under normal conditions this period varies between 2-3 months. However, duration of the treatment might be longer in case a sinus lift and/or bone dust grafting are applied. Prosthesis step is similar to conventional prosthesis steps.

Implant applications are done under local anesthesia, so the patient feels no pain. Is daily-care of implants important?

Daily care of implants influences the durability of implants. With an insufficient daily-care, problems on the gums surrounding the implant may lead to implant loss over time.
Daily-care of implants is not that difficult. It’s easy when enough time is given. You will be informed by your dentist of required daily-care according to the type of the prosthesis.

In which cases can the implant be applied?

Patients with a toothless lower jaw.
When patients with an edentulous lower jaw use palatine prosthesis, the movement of the tongue and absence of enough supporting tissue, the prosthesis becomes very free and functional problems arise. Movements because off coughing or yawing may displace prosthesis. Continuous indentation and increased bone desorption may worsen the situation. At least two implants applied to these patients will eliminate the problem and will improve the patient’s quality of life. When sufficient bone is available, fixed dentures can be applied easily.
Patients with toothless upper jaw.
In these patients movement is not as bad as at the lower jaw. With two implants, it is possible to increase the adhesiveness and the space occupied by the prosthesis gets smaller. This will ease the use of prosthesis and make the patient feel physiologically more comfortable. Especially patients with nausea problems, will feel better with the smaller space of the prosthesis.
Implants are used widely when a few teeth are missing on both upper and lower jaw. Instead of constructing bridge restorations (fixed dentures) implant application will be more suitable. It’s a big advantage with implant treatment, patients who have to use removable prosthesis, can also use fixed dentures.
For patients with only one missing tooth, instead of sacrificing two teeth, making only one implant will protect the neighbor teeth and prevent bone desorption.

What are the advantageous of implant-supported fixed restorations?
